When I travel through Brazil or abroad, it amazes me to realize that no other city has as many hairdressers, barber shops and beauty salons as São Paulo, a fact that tells a lot about the city I live in and the needs of its inhabitants. Some salons, especially those located in small houses on the outskirts of the city, show a peculiar type of painting on their walls and especially on their steel doors that has been drawing my attention for some years now. Creating images using an airbrush on this type of uneven surface with many moving parts is not easy, but it is possible to find well-done illustrations produced by skilled professionals. In many of these works, however, the lack of technical or aesthetic knowledge (and sometimes common sense) on the part of the artist causes the portrayed figures to present varying degrees of distortion in their features, offering an interesting contrast with the business very activity.
From my admiration for the work and effort of these artisans, who often do not even sign their works, came my second photobook, CLOSED ON MONDAYS. The 84-page book has 64 photographs taken between 2015 and 2020. In addition to the photos, text and visual programming, the silkscreen cover was also made by me.
A5, 84 pages, september 2020.
